Paul and Cathy Seymour started a shop in a small town in Pennsylvania 2 years ago.  Today they teach 60 to 100 students a week.  Join them for this year long study on how to build a successful shop in a troubled market.  Learn how to build your student base and expand Decorative Painting. 

 

Month 1-Developing a teaching/shop mission statement.  Is it really that important?  Sometimes we lose our direction and focus in our classroom and in our business.  A mission statement helps us stay focused and deliver a clear message to the public.  This article will help you develop a mission statement for your business or your teaching studio.  In addition we will show how this mission statement can improve your business.

Month 2-"I have the space, I have the time, I have the desire, but where are the students?" This installment will be about recruiting students to our classroom and our studio.

Month 3-"Looks matter  Creating a welcoming and positive environment in your classroom.  In addition we will include suggestion for classroom set up options.

Month  4 -"The class is set, the students are coming and I don't know what to do".   This installment is geared toward teachers that are starting a beginner class and are unsure about what to cover in the first few lessons.  It will include suggestions of an introductory curriculum We will also include a streaming video of two introductory paintings and the accompanying lesson plans and patterns.  One painting will be a wooden name tag and the other painting will be a simple floral plaque.

Month 5-"What the heck do I charge for my class?"  Pricing is one of the most important decisions that you will have to make.  This installment will give some pricing structures and options for your decorative painting class.

Month 6-"The hook...Okay I have the students but how can I keep them coming back"  This installment will talk about how to entice students to return through the first couple of session.  One you get them through the first 18 weeks you got em' for good.

Month 7-"The free class"- This installment will discuss the importance of free classes, the scheduling of free classes and some free class ideas. 

                This installment will include a streaming video of some easy and free classes for beginners

                including painted Christmas Cards and a painted Christmas ornament.

Month 8-"I think I can, I know you can".    This installment will have suggestions on how to motivate students, how to empower students to continue studying, and how to correct students while lifting their spirits.  Also included will be 20 ways to say "well done".

Month 9-"Reading the class"  A successful teacher must reflect the needs and desires of the students as well as leading the students toward new techniques and styles.  The importance of surveying the students and assessing their needs can’t be over stated.  This installment will have surveys and suggestions for ways to determine the needs and desires of your students.

Month 10-"Fling open the doors.  Offering an open house for your community."  This installment will offer a tutorial on the do's and don't of an open house.

Month 11-"The freedom of designing"  Someone that paints other artist’s pieces will paint for a while.  Someone that designs and creates their own pieces will paint for life.  This short tutorial will give ideas for teaching that first design class.  In addition we will offer a recipe for designing pieces.  A short streaming video with designing suggestions will be suggestions.
